Lightfoot’s Light-Hearted But Vital PSAs Are Humorous – and Human

By Steve Smith

I’ve just finished watching Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot’s series of “Stay at Home – Save Lives” public service announcements, or PSAs, which were produced for free by Havas, a Chicago advertising firm.

Once again, a Chicago agency steps up and reminds the rest of us why that city is one of America's great advertising creative hothouses. Good job, Havas. And you too, Mayor Lightfoot.

This PSA series shows that public officials can be humanized – well some of them anyway – and PSAs don’t have to be plain vanilla billboards.

While government leaders like Lightfoot and New York governor Andrew Cuomo are showing us inspiring leadership skills, others, like Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Georgia’s Brian Kemp (just to name a couple) are sticking to “business as usual” politics. Not only were they months behind in getting started battling the COVID-19 pandemic, they just can’t seem to get out of their own way.

If there ever was one, this is a time for courage, leadership and integrity. And a little bit of humor doesn’t hurt either.
